My Path Is Not Your Prescription — Three Women, Three Different Roads to Health

I want to tell you something that I think gets lost in the wellness world.

There is no one right way.

I know that sounds simple. But when you are surrounded by programs and protocols and people telling you exactly what to eat and when and how — it is easy to forget that your body is yours. Your history is yours. Your season of life is yours.

I was reminded of this recently looking at the three women in my family. Me. My youngest daughter. My oldest daughter.

Three women who all care deeply about their health. Three completely different paths.

Her Path — My Youngest

My youngest — Abby — is almost 21. She is in the gym. She is doing strength workouts and building the kind of muscle that will serve her metabolically for decades.

And she is wearing a CGM.

Not because she has diabetes. Not because something is wrong. But because she is curious about her body. She has had some GI issues and wanted data before going down a more invasive road. She wanted to understand how food, movement, and stress show up in her body in real time.

She is 21 and already asking the questions it took me decades to ask. And I could not be more proud.

Her Path — My Oldest

My oldest daughter — Haley — is finishing nursing school this spring. She does macros and Pilates.

She found what works for her body, her schedule, her life. Pilates gives her the movement and the mindfulness she needs. Macros give her the structure and the awareness around food that helps her feel her best.

She is not tracking her glucose. She is not in the gym lifting heavy. She is doing what works for her — and she is thriving.

My Path — Somewhere in the Middle

I spent 3 years doing macros and strength training. Lost 40+ pounds in perimenopause. Thought I had figured it out.

Then came the shingles. The fatigue. The inability to recover after workouts. And then — the insulin resistance diagnosis that humbled me and clarified everything at the same time.

I layered in a CGM. I started understanding blood sugar, eating order, glycemic variability — things nobody had ever explained to me. And I discovered that the order I ate my food changed everything. Protein and fiber first. Carbs last. Always. I started understanding my body at a level I never had before.

And here is what surprised me. The more data I had — the less I needed to obsess over tracking every number. The CGM gave me clarity. It made me more intuitive, not more anxious.

That is my path. Macros. Strength training. CGM. Blood sugar education. All layered together over years. Not all at once. Not overnight.

It Was Not Always Like This

I want to be honest with you about something.

I did not start my health journey until my girls were a few years from heading out the door. And before I figured it out — they watched me. They watched me chase skinny. They watched me go from one diet to the next. Low fat. Low calorie. Low carb. Chasing a number on a scale instead of chasing health.

I carried a lot of regret about that for a long time. I do not anymore.

These little ones watched me chase skinny for years. I am so grateful God gave me the time to show them what strong looks like.

Because here is what I have learned — success is a terrible separator, but failure is a powerful teacher. They did not need to watch me have it all figured out. They needed to watch me get back up. And both of my girls have had their own ups and downs with their bodies too. This journey — the real one — is never a straight line for any of us.

It is never too late to start.

And the comeback? That is the part worth watching.

Why I Am Telling You This

Because I watch women every day trying to follow someone else's path exactly.

They see my CGM content and think they need to start there. They see my FASTer Way content and think macros are the only answer. They see my daughter in the gym and think they need to be doing what she is doing.

And I want to gently say — maybe. Or maybe not.

What works for me may not work for you. What works for my youngest may not be your starting point. What works for my oldest may be exactly right for where you are.

We are all bioindividual. Our hormones, our history, our muscle mass, our stress levels, our season of life — all of it shapes how our body responds. There is no universal prescription.

Where to Start If You Are Not Sure

If you are a midlife woman trying to figure out where to begin — here is my honest guidance:

Start with the basics. Eat more protein. Stop eating carbs alone. Build some muscle. Sleep. Move your body in a way you actually enjoy.

Then layer in the data tools when you are ready.

And if you have been told you have insulin resistance or prediabetes — or you just feel like something is off and you cannot figure out why — I have free resources that can help you start connecting the dots.

But most importantly — give yourself permission to have your own path.

My path is not your prescription. 🩺
